Reflective log on recent training

Some deaneries may ask for a reflective log of recent training.  Below is an example of some reflection on a recent training. For my portfolio I included a three or four more reflective commentaries on study days or tutorials....

Reflection on Recent Training

Below is a reflection of some of the recent training I have undergone.

Study day1 /Module 1
30th October
Subject : Treatment planning
Provider: Hogwarts University

Discussion
At the end of the module there is an assignment. The assignment this module was to write and argument for and against the intervention of a non-vital asymptomatic tooth.

I found the module stimulating and a chance to really reflect on my current treatment decision making. It was also a chance consider the underlying (or lack of) evidence for certain decisions. There was heavy emphasis on pulp testing, looking at the accuracy and variability of results. My clinical practice was changed- I now use two methods of pulp testing- cold and electrical.

The feedback I had from the essay was that it was excellent and it achieved the highest mark in the class at 80%.

The study day involved lectures from various providers on general treatment planning, endodontic status, caries management and also some case discussion. It was an interesting day, but I did feel the caries management lecture could have been a bit more up to date.

Outcome
I think the main outcome from the first module is that I will pulp test more frequently and using several different methods.

18th November 2010
Subject: Smoking Cessation.
Provider:Smoking Advice Service

Discussion
This two our session took place within the practice with a Smoking Cessation Co-ordinator on how to give brief advice to patients on stopping smoking. This came about as a result of a tutorial with Dentist XYZ. We were discussing writing some patient leaflets about common subjects when we both identified not being up to date with possible referral pathways for stop smoking services. One of the nurses was asked to research into the possibility of having someone visit and do some training.

The presentation was well delivered, evidence based and well though out. It was pitched at the right level and the staff seemed to feel motivated (especially the two smokers in the group!). We were given some business cards for the stop smoking services and there was some group work involved.

Outcome: more confidence whilst delivering cessation advice in surgery.

  1. Thanks for taking the time to discuss this, I feel strongly about it and love learning more on this topic. If possible, as you gain expertise, would you mind updating your blog with extra information? It is extremely helpful for me. Invisalign Rugby
